Verbal war before the clash on Saturday

Australia yesterday fired their normal verbal assault before Saturday’s big game at Newlands.

Micael Foley, the Australian assistant coach, were quoted in newspapers saying that the tighthead prop for the Springboks, BJ Botha, is “scrummaging illegally and has been getting away with it the whole season”. Botha is highly regarded by ex-Springbok Toks van der Linde who said that “Botha was one of the finds of SA rugby and the Aussies are just trying psychological warfare to hide their own shortcomings”.

It is clear that the Australians see the set phases as an important aspect of Saturday’s game and picked their front row with this in mind, including Stephan Moore at hooker and Matt Dunning and Guy Shephardson as props to bolster their tight five and picking big Wycliff Palu at eigthman to add bulk to their pack.

Australian side to face the Boks:15.Julian Huxley, 14.Drew Mitchell, 13.Stirling Mortlock(captain), 12.Matt Giteau, 11.Lote Tuqiri, 10.Stephen Larkham, 9.George Gregan, 8.Wycliff Palu, 7.George Smith, 6.Rocky Elsom, 5.Daniel Vickerman, 4.Nathan Sharp, 3.Guy Shephardson, 2.Stephen Moore, 1.Matt Dunning

Reserves: Adam Freier, Al Baxter, Mark Chisholm, Phil Waugh, Stephen Hoiles, Adam Ashley-Cooper and Mark Gerrard.

It is interesting to note that coach, John Connolly, included five forwards on the bench, a clear indication that they expect a massive battle up front.

SARB hereby wishes the Boks all the best for Saturday.

A wise choice of the coach. These two teams are two of the toughest in the world and there will be a fair bit of action as well as going head to head. No doubt there will be loads of action which is great in my opinion.
