All Blacks snatch victory away from SA

On an afternoon where SA played well for 65 minutes the All Blacks snatched victory in the last 15 minutes with two converted tries that stunned all supporters into silence. All is not doom and gloom after the loss yesterday and the few kinks in the SA Rugby machine can easily be sorted out before the World Cup starts in September.

The Springboks started the game with passion and stayed in the All Blacks faces, something that they do not like and it showed in their play. Dan Carter was rattled by the tenacious defence of Butch James and Schalk Burger and he stuggled to get his outside backs away and he missed three kicks at goal that could have had the All Blacks leading at half time.Instead SA went into the break leading 11-6 and well deserved.

The second half was much the same story, with SA defending like trojans and forcing the All Blacks into mistakes. This led to Butch James scoring a try and SA were leading 21-12 with 14 minutes left on the clock. Then the Boks started making basic errors and against quality opposition you can not afford to make mistakes because they will make you pay, and pay Richie McCaw and his team made SA do.

A major cause for concern for SA rugby is the scrums.Where SA dominate line outs and secure a lot of ball in the loose teh Boks are struggling at scrum time. This needs experts to come to the party and sort the problems out, the rest will fix itself the more the players gain in stature from performances like yesterday.

SARB decided to rate the Springbok players on their performance:

15. Percy Montgomery 8/10: Another great test by him. Good positional play and strong on attack

14. Ashwin Willemse 5.5/10: Solid on defence and willing on attack but lacks the pace to be an international wing.

13. Jaque Fourie 5/10 : Again solid on defence but lacking on attack

12. Jean de Villiers 4/10: His worst test for SA yet. He had no influence on the game and took wrong options on attack. He needs to think long and hard about his game at international level

11. JP Pietersen 4/10: Made a huge mistake on defence that cost SA the game. To quiet and does not look for work on the field. SA missed Bryan Habana yesterday

10. Butch James 7/10: One of his best performances at flyhalf in the Bok jersey. Managed to put Carter under pressure but still takes wrong options at times.

9. Ruan Pienaar 8/10: Had a fantastic test. His kicking and option taking were first class. An all round good performance

8. Bob Skinstad 3/10: A pathetic test. Struggled at the base of the scrum and had no impact in the loose. SA realy missed Pierre Spies no 8 yesterday

7. Danie Rossouw 9/10: Tackled and carried the ball like a demon. Good in the line out and never stopped trying for the full 80 minutes

6. Schalk Burger 9/10: Rock solid on defence and proved he is one of the best in the world in his position. Together with Danie Rossouw the stars in the Bok side

5. Victor Matfield 7.5/10: Another solid performance by the lock. Struggled to keep the team together in the last 10 minutes but otherwise a good test

4. Bakkies Botha 7.5/10: The big man worked hard all afternoon in the tight exchanges and had a great test.

3. BJ Botha 4/10: Not a good test at all. Struggled in the scrums and put his team under pressure.

2. Gary Botha 6.5/10: Not as effective as a ball carrier but defended well and can feel satisfied with his first full test

1. Os du Randt 5/10: Solid first half but after that had no impact. He is not fit enough to play international rugby

Reserves:

Frans Steyn 4/10: Had a shocker and could do nothing right

Pedrie Wannenburg 5.5/10: Conceded a yellow card within seconds of coming onto the field but played well when he returned

CJ van der Linde 5/10: Had almost no impact on the game

Johan Muller 5/10: Made no impact when he came on, solid line out option though

Wynand Olivier 5/10: Defende well but got no chance to attack

SARB SA man of the match: Schalk Burger and Danie Rossouw
