ABSA Currie Cup final is here
Published by Maverick October 24th, 2007 in Currie Cup. Tags: No Tags. After all the hype of the 2007 RWC it’s time to return focus to SA’s premier local rugby competition.
The Currie Cup final takes place in Bloemfontein this Saturday between the Cheetahs( their 4th final in a row) and the Lions. This all “Cat” affair should be interesting since these two teams were franchise partners in the Super-14 for a number of years. This partnership saw loads of bickering and fighting between the two unions and Saturday is the ideal opportunity to settle the score once and for all. The last time these two sides met in a Currie Cup final was in 1994 when Transvaal(Lions) were victorius by 56-33. The Lions have won the Currie Cup 8 times(including 1 draw) and the Cheetahs have 4(including 1 draw) Currie Cup trophies. Recent years have seen the Cheetahs operate with more success than the Lions.
The form team of the 2007 Currie Cup is the Cheetahs. They have lost only one game leading up to the final. The Cheetahs did beat the Lions in both their pool games, but all these results mean nothing come Saturday, the team that handles pressure the best will win. The Cheetahs will run onto the field as favourites though looking for their 5th ABSA Currie Cup trophy.
