Springboks out pace Wales

The Springboks out paced Wales with a convincing performance scoring 32 points to Wales 12. The men in green had few chances but took every scoring opportunity running in four spectacular tries. Wales had a huge share of possession and territory but couldn’t convert their efforts into points. Scoring two 50/50 tries, one being a classic ‘northern hemisphere’ style chip over the Springboks back line for the Welsh Fullback, Stoddart, to collect the ball out the air and score on his debut. Charvis also pounced on a unlucky bounce for Ruan Pienaar on the South African try line to score his 22nd try, a record for forward players. The Springbok scrums were rock solid compared to the line outs, without Victor Matfield, which went astray at times. Steyn, Pretorius and Pienaar had a good day with the boot rounding off a impressive performance by the Boks giving Jake White the perfect send-off in his final Test as national coach. Wales – who have a new coach assuming the reigns in just over a week’s time – were clearly eager to impress their new boss. The forwards, despite battling at the set pieces, gave a strong account of themselves at the breakdowns.
But in the final reckoning, the Boks were simply too well organised on defence, and possessed too much firepower on attack for the game to have ever been a genuine contest. Not for a moment did one believe that South Africa would lose.
First Juan Smith – dancing his way through the midfield – then Jaques Fourie conspired to take the game beyond doubt before the first half an hour was up. Both were well-worked team tries and showed that the visitors simply enjoyed a few extra gears.
