The Bokke put in a clinical performance against a poor Welsh team to come out victorious in Jake’s final test match in charge of the World Champions. The victory also means that the Springboks will end the year as the number 1 ranked team in the world on the IRB rankings.
SA took the lead as early as the 3rd minute through a longrange penalty by Francois Steyn, but then they had to withstand a period of intense pressure by the Welsh. The Bokke dominated in the scrums, thanks to a powerhouse display by CJ van der Linde. The Bok lineouts were a different story, without Victor Matfield the Bokke struggled to dominate this phase of play and lost a few of their own throughs. Once the Bokke started to show more patience on attack, the gaps opened up and the World Champs ran in 3 well worked tries before half time. Wales scored once just before half time, but were never really in the game.
The second half saw The Bokke run in two more tries to the one of the Welsh and the Springbokke cruised to a 34-12 victory.
SARB decided to rate the SA players on their performance:
15. Ruan Pienaar 5.5/10: Not the best game by the talented younster. Was caught out of position a few times and his fumble led to the first Welsh try.
14. JP Pietersen 6.5/10: Improves every time he plays for the Bokke. Scored a good try but missed a couple of tackles
13. Jaque Fourie 8.5/10: The best Springbok back on the park. Solid on defense and scored two fantastic tries.
12. Francois Steyn 7/10: Fearless on attack and defense but slipped a couple of tackles. He has a great future in the Bok jersey!
11. Bryan Habana 6.5/10: Did not get enough chances on attack but did set up Pietersen’s try and he was rock solid on defence.
10. Andre Pretorius 6/10: Solid without being spectacular. Looked a bit rusty in the first half but finished strongly
9. Ricky Januarie 5/10: Not a great game. He looks unfit and overweight and does not deserve to be playing for the World Champions
8. Ryan Kankowski 6.5/10: Scored a try in his debut test but did not do anything spectacular.
7. Juan Smith 8.5/10: One of the best in the World, put in another solid performance and was rewarded with a try.
6. Schalk Burger 9/10: Brilliant. He made some huge hits on defense and was all over the park
5. Johann Muller 5.5/10: Solid but does not have the influence on the game that Victor Matfield does.
4. Bakkies Botha 7.5/10: The ‘enforcer’ had another big game, he loves the rough stuff and enjoys being physical on the field
3. Jannie du Plessis 7/10: Scrummed well and helped the Bok pack to dominate
2. John Smit 6.5/10: Missed his jumpers a couple of times but scrummed well and defended well.
1. CJ van der Linde 7.5/10: A huge game by the prop, scrummed well and carried the ball strongly.
Reserves: Heinke van der Merwe 6.5/10: Can be satisfied with his debut, solid in the scrums.
Wynand Olivier 6.5/10: Solid on defense but had little chance on attack.
SARB man of the match: Schalk Burger
