Golden Lions Rugby Union President Jannie Ferreira have made it clear that his union will not tolerate any form of racism following forwards coach Leon Boshoff‘s suspension.
The GLRU announced on Tuesday Boshoff has been suspended with immediate effect, pending further investigations.
As revealed on Tuesday Boshoff, who was livid after the performances of certain players in the 18-56 loss to the Stormers last Saturday, allegedly let rip with a verbal tirade that upset members of the squad.
It was alleged that Boshoff told Ashwin Willemse, Lawrence Sephaka, and Earl Rose that they are only on contract and in the squad because they are black (or non-white in the case of Rose and Willemse).
It was also alleged that other members of the squad felt “abused” by the abrasive nature of some of Boshoff’s remarks.
Ferreira said he can’t comment on the specifics of the case, as there is a legal process to be followed.
“However, I want to make it very clear – the union [GLRU] will not tolerate any form of racism,” said Ferreira.
“Let me also make it very clear, with this I am, in no way whatsoever, implicating that there was any racism.
“However, you asked me about our stance towards racism and the issue of racism has been raised in the media. This is simply our view of racism,” Ferreira added.
